Pre War
John William Reed was born in 1883 in Preston, Herts, the son of George and Mary Eliza Reed (nee Thrussell) and one of nine children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living in Sootfield Green, Preston, later moving to Manuden and Elmdon in Essex.
By 1911 the family had moved to High Street, Melbourn, Cambridgeshire and John was working as a farm labourer.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire and initially joined Suffolk Regiment, later transferring to the 2nd Battalion, Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment
He served in France and Flanders and was killed in action on 14 May 1917 when the Battalion were at Bullecourt. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £4 and pay owing of £5 6s 10d. His mother received a pension of 3s 6d a week.
