Pre War

Frederick Reed was born in 1893 in Bishop's Stortford to William and Emma Reed and baptised on 26 March 1893 at Holy Trinity, Bishop's Stortford.

On the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 8 Middle Row, New Town, Bishop's Stortford and working as a General Labourer. His father and elder brother Walter were both employed as Bricklayer’s Labourers.

His father later lived at 16 Barrells Down Road, Bishop's Stortford.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at in Hertford and served with the Hertfordshire Regiment, initially under service no. 2811, and was in France from 21 January 1915.

He died from gas poisoning probably sustained on 11 May when the Battalion moved through the village of Fonquevillers in the evening towards some old British trenches east of the village and were subjected to a very heavy gas shell bombardment. The majority of the Battalion were evacuated to hospital during the night.

(N.B. His Medal Roll index card suggests he transferred to Bedfordshire Regiment under 265679, however all other documents only show him only with the Hertfordshire Regiment. The 1st Herts Regt was re-numbered in 1917 which is why the longer number has been used)

Additional Information

Listed a a lance corporal on the regimental memorial. His father William received a war gratuity of £18 and pay owing of £23 15s 9d. He also received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 4 February 1919.
