Arthur Bishop was born in 1883 in Codicote, Herts, the son of William and Sarah Bishop.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at High Heath Cottage, Codicote, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They remained living there in 1901, at which time Arthur was working as an agricultural labourer.
His mother died in 1906 and Arthur married Catherine Bates on 8 May 1910 in Friern Barnet, Herts. On the 1911 Census, he was living at 11 Regent Parade, North Finchley with his wife and working as domestic gardener. They had two children, Harold born 1912, and Gladys born 1914.
His widow later lived at 202 Woodhouse Road, North Finchley.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted at North Finchley and joined the 15th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment under reg. no. 29822
He transferred to 9th Royal Fusiliers in France on 19th October 1916 and served with them until he was wounded and died as a result on 24 Aug 1918. He is buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
Brother of Alfred Bishop who served with the Hertfordshire Regiment and died of wounds on 26 March 1918. His brother Herbert Cecil (also known as Cecil Herbert) served with the Royal Engineers and survived the war. His widow Catherine received a war gratuity of £9 10s and pay owing of £7 17s 5d.
