Pre War

George Edward Redding was born in 1885 in Islington to Robert William Redding, policeman, and Margaret (nee Wynn),

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Robert William (born 1883), George, Joseph (born 1888) and Henry James (born 1890) were living at 238, Hornsey Road, Islington.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Robert (coachman domestic), George & Joseph (gardeners), Henry, Albert (born 1892), Augustus (born 1894), Percy (born 1897) and Amelia (born 1900) were living at Quakers Lane, South Mimms, Potters Bar.

George enlisted at Hornsey, London on 2 Mar 1905 in Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment) as Private L/10085 ( L/ indicates a Regular engagement, usually 7 years with the Colours & 5 years on Reserve), and recorded as in India with the 1st Battalion in the 1911 census.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of the Great War George was posted to 4th Battalion of his regiment and landed at Boulogne, France on 14 Aug 1914 forming part of 8 Brigade, 3rd Division.  The Division were soon in action at Mons (23-24 Aug), Le Cateau (26 Aug 1914), Marne (7-10 Sep 1914), Aisne (12-15 Sep 1914).


George may have been wounded in the battle of Aisne. He was repatriated to the 2nd London General Hospital located in St Mark’s College at 552 King’s Road, Chelsea where George died of wounds on 23 Oct 1914. He was buried in Brompton cemetery on 27 Oct 1914.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £8 2s 6d was paid to his mother Margaret. Brother Robert served with Essex Regiment and was killed in action on 3 May 1917
