Pre War

John Bird was born in 1894 in Stockwell, London to John Thomas and Sarah Bird.

On the 1911 Census the family were living at 72 Tyers Street, Lambeth, Kennington, London and he was working as a Drapery Assistant.

Wartime Service

As no medal records seem to exist, it is possible that John never served overseas, but became ill and died in the UK before being posted.

Additional Information

War gratuity was inadmissible as he had less than 6 months service, but pay owing of £2 4s 5d was awarded to his father John. The Register of Soldiers' Effects states that he died 'At Home' at the Bishop's Stortford Hospital (appendix).

*1 Believed more correctly, (County of London) Bn. London Regiment (The Queens's).
