Born in 1880 in Wormley, Herts, son of Matthew and Hannah Read, who lived in High Road, Wormley. 1911 Census: boarder at 6 Willow Street, Chingford, Essex with brother Walter, and working as a nursery gardener. Married Alice A B Cockburn in early 1916 at Lewisham and had son Leonard later the same year. Lived in Brockley, Surrey.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Camberwell, Surrey. Formerly 70818, 111th T.R. Res. Bn.. Served in France and Flanders. Killed in action.
