Leslie James Bignell was born in 1897, in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire, son of James Bignell, a Domestic Gardener and Lily Elizabeth (nee King) Bignell. The eldest of eight children.


He was baptized on 2 May 1897, in the Parish Church, Chipperfield, Herts.


The 1901 & 1911 Census indicate Leslie was brought up by his grandmother Maria Timberlake and his aunt Louisa Timberlake at, The Common, Chipperfield, Herts.

Wartime Service

Leslie enlisted at Watford, Herts on 31 May 1915, aged 19, posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps with the service number R/13460, and sent home on the reserve.


He was embodied on 10 August 1916, and sent to France, he joined the 9th Battalion in the field on 27 August 1916. He was killed in action at the battle of Passchendaele on 17 October 1917.


He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the fallen in Belgium.

Additional Information

His Aunt Louisa Timberlake, of Queens Street, Chipperfield, Herts, was awarded a Dependents Pension of 7/- a week from 7 May 1918. His effects of £3-9s-10d, Pay Owing went to his mother Lily. His father James received his War Gratuity of £10-10s-00d,
