Pre War

Edgar John Rayner was born in 1894 in Bishop's Stortford to John Harold and Elizabeth Catherine Rayner and baptised on 25 March 1894 at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford.


On the 1901 Census, the family were living at Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford where his father ran the Grocer's Shop. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Westminster and served with the London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles).


He was killed during the Battle of the Somme and his body was not recovered for burial, or not identified and is therefore commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Additional Information

Brother to Frank Rayner who died in October 1918, also named on the Holy Trinity and Town Memorials, Bishop's Stortford. Probate was granted to his father on 25 September with effects of £21.


He also served under service no. 552403 London Regt.
