Pre War

William John Bryant Ravenhill was born in Turnford, Hertfordshire, on 27th August 1898, son of William Ravenhill a, Nurseryman/Carman and Susan Isabel Ravenhill (nee Ravenhill). One of eight children.


1901 Census records William Jr. aged 2, living with his parents, three sisters, Florence (9), Blanche (6) & Grace (4) at, 15 Turnford Villas, Turnford, Herts. The Census records the family had two boarders.


1911 Census records William Jr. as John, aged 12, living with his parents, three sisters and two brothers still at 15 Turnford Villas.

Wartime Service

William Jr. enlisted aged 17, on 27th July 1916, posted to the Army Reserve the following day the 28th. Mobilized for war service on 29th January 1915, now aged 18, posted to the Royal Flying Corps with the service number 56378 and rank of Air Mechanic 3rd Class.


He was discharged no longer physically fit for war service under “Par 392 (xvi) K.R. 1912 (sick)” on 1st February 1918.


Issued with the Silver War Badge No. B302663 on 1st October 1919.


He died on 15th December 1920, aged 22, he was buried at Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, on 17th December 1920.

He was not awarded a Medal as he did not serve overseas.


He is recorded as John Ravenhill on St Clements Church Memorial, Turnford.
