Pre War

Oliver Lewen Bevan was born on 5 June 1894, in Southwark, London, son of Ernest Bevan, a Grocer Shopkeeper and Eva (nee Jermine) Bevan. One of nine children five died in infancy.


1901 Census records Oliver aged 6, living with his parents, brother William (9), and sister Gladys (3) at, (Chandlers Shop) 99, Harrison Street, St Pancras, London.


1911 Census, the family are still living at, 99 Harrison Street, Oliver’s occupation is given as an Office Worker.


Oliver married Lilian Mary Slater (who was born in Hackney, London in 1896) the marriage was registered in Newcastle Upon Tyne, in the early part of 1918. 

Wartime Service

On enlisting Oliver was posted to the Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 915661.


He arrived in France on 9 March 1916. Later Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. Oliver died on 25 October 1918, of wounds received in action. 

Additional Information

His only known connection to Borehamwood, was his widow Lilian is recorded as living at “Vizille” Borehamwood, Herts, after his death.
