Pre War

Sidney James Randall was born on 16 Jul 1897 in Tring to  Alfred Ernest Randall, painter & decorator, and Clara Ellen (nee Green).


On the 1891Census the family of parents, Alice May (born 1887), and Alfred H were living at 27, Henry Street , Tring.


Clara Ellen was admitted to Herts County Asylum on 1 Dec 1900 and died in 1924.


On the 1901 Census the family of Alfred Ernest, Alice May,  Alfred H  and Walter F (born 1893) were living at 11, Akeman Street, Tring.


On the 1911 Census Sidney was listed as at school and a houseboy and was living with his father, Alice May (housekeeper), Alfred (solicitor’s clerk), Walter (butcher),  at 40, Park Road, Tring.


Sidney migrated to Canada along with his sister Alice May.

Wartime Service

Sidney attested in Winnipeg on 11 Oct 1917, aged 20, occupation blacksmith and giving his address as 279 Niagara Road, Winnipeg  and was posted to the Overseas Depot  Ottawa on 1 Jan 1918. He embarked from Canada aboard SS Cretic on 4 Feb 1918 arriving in UK at 16 Canadian Reserve Battalion on 4 Mar 1918.


On 11 Jul 1918 he was transferred to 44th (Manitoba) Battalion Canadian Infantry, !0 Canadian Brigade, 4th Canadian Division and arrived in France on 13 Jul 1918. The Division took part in the Battle of the Canal du Nord (27 Sep-1 Oct 1918) and were then transferred to Picardy to continue the advance at Battle of Valenciennes (1-2 Nov) and Battle of the Sambre (4 Nov 1918). It was in this last action that Sidney was wounded and although on 4 Nov 1918 he was admitted to 12 General Hospital, Rouen, with wounds in his left leg and chest, he died from these wounds on 12 Nov 1918.

Additional Information

Sidney is also commemorated on the family headstone in Tring Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:


ALSO OF SYDNEY JAMES RANDALL, WHO DIED IN ACTION NOVEMBER 11TH[?]. AGED [?].
