Pre War
Francis Thomas was born on 9 Jul 1890 (baptised 24 Aug 1890) in Harpenden to Frederick W Randall, a tin plate worker and gas fitter, and Frances Ann (nee Brooks).
On the 1891 Census Francis was living with his parents at Moreton End lane, Harpenden On the 1901 census the family consisting of Parents, Francis, and sisters Susan E (born 1893), Rose A (born 1896) and Louisa A (born 1899) were living at Luton Road, Harpenden. The 1911 Census shows Francis working in a flour mill and the family of parents, Louisa, Hilda (born 1903) and Alice (born 1906) at the High Street, Wheathampstead.
Wartime Service
Francis volunteered for the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) as Private G/8774 and went to France on 21 May 1915 with the 8th (Service) Battalion.
He was wounded on 5 Oct 1915 while the Battalion were in the Front Line at Loos and was returned to UK. After recovery he returned to France on 19 Apr 1916 this time joining the 4th Battalion of his Regiment. He was again wounded, on 17 Jun 1916, and was returned to UK. He died from his wounds in King George Hospital, London on 28 Aug 1916.
His family arranged his burial in St Helen’s Church yard, Wheathampstead on 1 Sep 1916.
