Pre War

Henry (known as Harry) was born on 24 Mar 1894 in Tring to William Rance, boot riveter, and Ann Helen (nee Hegarty)


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Frederick (tailor, born 1883), William (cow boy on farm, born 1886), Laura (born 1889), Ernest (born 1892) George (born 1896), Rose (born 1898) and Frank (born1901) were living at 6, West Passage, Tring.


On the 1911 Census Henry was a cowman on a farm and was living with his parents, (father was a house painter), Laura was a general domestic, George and Sidney  (born 1905) at West Passage, Tring.

Wartime Service

Harry attested in Niagara, Ontario on 6 Jul 1915 giving his occupation as Tinsmith and was allotted the Service Number 451060.


He sailed from Halifax aboard SS Sayonia on 22 Nov 1915 arriving in UK on 2 Dec 1915 and was posted to ‘C’ Company 58 Battalion (Central Ontario) as a Bugler. He was admitted to Hospital at Bramshott on 30 Dec 1915 and was transferred to 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge where he died 6 Jan 1916  from Cerebral Spinal Meningitis.

Harry appears to share his father's grave (not CWGC) and the headstone bears the inscription:

ALSO OF HARRY RANCE, SON OF THE ABOVE [William Rance] BUGLER OF THE 58TH C. L. I. BRANDFORD CANADA WHO DIED AT CAMBRIDGE JANUARY 6TH 1916. AGED 22 YEARS.

IN LIFE WE LOVE THEM OH SO DEAR. IN DEATH WE WILL DO THE SAME.
