Pre War

Arthur George Rainbow was born in 1887 in South Mimms to George Rainbow, domewstic gardener, and Mary (nee Hann).

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Arthur V (born 1887), Arthur George, Walter Samuel (born 1896) were living at Quakers Lane, South Mimms, Potters Bar.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Albert, Arthur, Walter, Herbert William (born 1898), Alice Mary (born 1897) and Louisa Sarah (born 1901) were living at Quakers Lane.

On the 1911 the family as at the 1901 Census were still living at Knowle Cottage, Quakers Lane. Arthur and Herbert were domestic gardeners, Walter was a baker’s assistant.

Wartime Service

Arthur volunteered as Trooper 1667 in 2nd King Edwards Horse, possibly on its raising on 24 Aug 1914.

Arthur went France with his unit on 15 Jul 1915 to the Ypres Sector. King Edward’s Horse were attached to Xiv Corps, but were disbanded in Aug 1917. Arthur, along with others, were nominally transferred to 1st /4th Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 61274 before being transferred to the 11 Battalion, Tank Corps as Private 3302835.No Service Records were found for Arthur so his location when wounded in Apr 1918 (German Spring Offensive) was not determined. Available records state that Arthur died of wounds on 13 Apr 1918, but his CWGC lists him on the Pozieres Memorial Panels which suggests his remains were not recovered.
