Pre War

Son of Walter/Walton and Mary (nee ALLEN) BENTLEY; husband of Nellie (nee GREEN) BENTLEY.

His parent’s marriage is proving elusive.

Ernest was born 1890 in either Cane End, Oxon, or Mapledurham, Oxon, and baptised 12 October 1890 at St Margaret’s, Mapledurham. He married 1914 in the Watford district, and resided in Watford.  Nellie remarried 1917 in the Watford district to George H GLENISTER, and died 1975 in the Watford district aged 87.

On the 1891 Census, aged 9 months he lived in Caversham, Oxon, with his parents and two siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 10 he lived in Bradfield, Berks, with his parents and one sibling.  On the 1911 Census, an assistant baker aged 20, he lived in Watford.

Recorded as living in Watford when he enlisted in Little Pulteney Street.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Little Poultney Street; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was killed in action.

Unfortunately, Ernest’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
