Pre War

Ernest John was born on 26 May 1892 in Knightsbridge, London. He was the only son of John Hunter Dodd, Laundry Proprietor, and Eliza Emma (nee Hewins).


By 1901 the family had moved and were living at East Common, Harpenden. On the 1911 Census Ernest is employed as a Surveyor’s Articled pupil. He later became a Chartered Surveyor. He played football as an amateur for Luton Town and cricket for Hertfordshire.

Wartime Service

Ernest was a 2nd Lieutenant in in C Battery 177 Brigade RFA.


He was killed in action near the Menin Gate, Ypres on 17 Jul 1917.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. E Dodd, East Common, Harpenden, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription: "ONLY SON OF JOHN & EMMA DODD OF HARPENDEN NOT DEAD, BUT LIVING UNTO THEE" Probate granted to his mother of £415 17s 7 d including War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £117 17s 7d.
