Pre War

Edwin Beeston was born in Cheswardine, Bishop's Drayton, Shropshire in 1891 to Edwin and Emma Beeston. The family had moved to Elmdon in Essex (where his mother war born) by 1901, but on the 1911 Census he was living with his family at 20 High Street, Bishop's Stortford, where his father was a Master Bootmaker and Edwin was working as a grocer's errand boy.

He married Alice Poulter in Kensington in 1914 and they had a child Charles Edwin Beeston born 11 September 1914.

Wartime Service

As no medal records seem to exist, it is likely that Edwin never served overseas, but became ill and died in the UK before being posted.

He died in Bishop's Stortford on 9 March 1915 of chronic parenchymatous nephritis (kidney inflammation) aggravated by A/S (active service?).

Additional Information

His widow Alice received his pay owing of £1 18s 9d and a war gratuity of £3. Although initially no dependant’s allowance was payable, on reconsideration a pension of 18s 9d a week was paid from 4 April 1917.

*1 Believed more correctly, (County of London) Bn. London Regiment (Kensington).
