Albert James was born on 29 Jul 1892 in Luton to Frederick Beaumont, butcher, and Agnes (nee Rowley).

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Alice (born 1888), Mabel (born 1890), Albert J, Frederick A (born 1895), Elizabeth G (born 1896) were living at High Street, Markyate, also recorded was Arthur Lacey as assistant butcher.

On the 1911 Census the Family of parents, Mabel A, Albert J, Frederick Arthur, and Elizabeth Gertrude    were living at 38 High Street, Markyate. Mother Agnes, Albert and Frederick were assisting in the Butchery.

Wartime Service

Albert (known as Bert) volunteered at Luton on 2 Sep 1914 and attested for the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 13391 on 3 Sep 1914 and believed to have been posted to 10 (Reserve) Battalion.

Promoted to Serjeant on 27 Oct 1914.

Albert was posted to 27th Young Soldier Battalion on 31 Oct 1914 which had no Regimental Affiliation and was based at Clipstone Camp in Nottinghamshire.

On 1 Sep 1919 He was renumbered as Serjeant TR/9/8002 in Training Reserve but had been sent to Hospital on 30 Aug 1916 with Appendicitis and Abscess. He died at St Albans on 12 Dec 1918.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £9 ans arrears of £17 10s 3d was paid to his father.


Bert's headstone (not CWGC) bears the inscription:

IN EVER LOVING MEMORY OF “BERT”
ALBERT JAMES BEAUMONT SERGT. 10TH BEDS REGT. WHO DIED DECEMBER 12 1916. AGE 24 YEARS.
NOT GONE FROM MEMORY NOR GONE FROM LOVE, BUT GONE TO SERVE HIS KING ABOVE.
