Pre War
Son of Mary Ann (formerly BEASLEY, nee GOSS) PINNINGTON and the late George BEASLEY.
His parents married 13 October 1884 at St Mary’s, Bletchley, Bucks. George died 1897 in the Watford district aged 42. Mary remarried 23 September 1899 at St Andrew’s, Watford, to Thomas PINNINGTON. Mary died 25 October 1945 in Watford aged 82, and was buried 29 October in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Thomas died 14 August 1948 in Watford aged 79.
Herbert was born 20 November 1895 in Watford, and baptised 27 June 1896 at St Mary’s, Bletchley. He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 6 January 1902 to 13 February 1902; seems to have transferred briefly to Alexandra School, Watford, before returning to Callowland Board School from 21 May 1902 to 26 November 1909. He resided in Watford, and was employed at Messrs Benskin’s.
On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in Watford, with his mother, step-father and seven siblings. On the 1911 Census, a wheelwright’s apprentice aged 15, he still lived in Watford, with his mother, step-father and five siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 11 August 1915, and was killed in action in the front line near Bazentin-le-Petit.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, Herbert’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
Herbert is also commemorated on his mother and step-father's grave in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Has a entry in the National Roll of the Great War.
