Pre War

Alfred was the second child of George and Annie Beale and was recorded as born in Eaton Socon, Bedfordshire. In 1911 the family lived in Odsey, Ashwell Station.

He is recorded as living in Ashwell when he enlisted in Hitchin, but this is likely to be an abbreviated postal address for Odsey.

Wartime Service

Alfred served and died in the Essex Regiment, but contradictory records also list him as formerly 98429 Royal Field Artillery and 19001 Northampton Regiment perhaps he served in all three.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs A Beale of 35 St Peter’s Street, Bedford, ordered his headstone inscription: “THY WILL BE DONE”. Please note: The CWGC records for the concentration details and graves registration record him as 41833, Lance Corporal and date of death as 16/10/1918 so is the identification questionable. An Alfred Beale aged 12 lived in Ashwell in 1911; father George, mother Annie. 41836 died 13 Oct 1918 & effects were sent to Annie so 41833 is not the same person.
