Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Pre War

Born on 30 Jul 1892 in Darenth Asylum, Dartford, Kent son of Dr. Fletcher and Emily Dora (Hadwen) Beach. Educated at Haileybury College 1907-10 and Worcester College, Oxford (B.A. 1916). He married Eileen Waller Bates (later Mrs Hydes) in Oct 1915 and they lived at 3 Dunally Park, Shepperton-on-Thames and had a son.

Wartime Service

Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in Oct 1914 and served in Gallipoli from 17 Jul 1915 when he landed in Suvla Bay and stayed for three months. He was invalided out with dysentery. After six months he returned to the battalion in Egypt and was promoted acting Major. He was severely wounded at the First Battle of Gaza and then again in the taking of Jerusalem and returned to England to a hospital in Berkley Square, London and then in Paignton, Devon. After discharge on 9 Nov he went on leave and died at Ashdown Park Hotel, Coulsdon from influenza and pneumonia. DSO Palestine (London Gazette Jun 1918) “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his company forward to cover the withdrawal of the advanced troops, remaining under fire and shell fire for two hours, until the operation shad been successfully carried out. He was seriously wounded during the action.”
