Pre War

Son of John and Hephzibah Mary Louisa (nee ALLEN) BAVINGTON.

His parents married 1895 in the Cuckfield, Sussex, district.  Hephzibah died 1935 in Watford aged 63, and was buried 15 June in Vicarage Road Cemetery; John died 1958 in Watford aged 86, and was buried 25 August in North Watford Cemetery.

John was born 29 August 1897 in Watford.  He attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 12 February 1906 to 28 July 1911.  He resided in Watford, and was employed by John Dickinson & Co at their Apsley Mills, Herts.

On the 1901 Census, aged 3 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a schoolboy aged 13, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and six siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly Private 5293 23rd (County of London) Battalion London Regiment and Private 7174 and 653508 21st (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles).  


He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and was presumed killed in action.

Unfortunately, John’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a Death announcement for John in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 16 August 1919.
