Pre War
Henry Price was born in Tring in 1886 to James Price, bootmaker and Mary Ann Jane (nee Gale).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, (Jane a laundress) ,James (born 1871, boot finisher), Rose (born 1873, brushmaker) , Ralph (born 1875, boot finisher), Charles (born 1881), Amy (born 1884), Henry with boarder James Bucher were living at 49, Alexander Street, Chesham, Bucks.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Sarah (born 1878, brushmaker),
Amy, (brushmaker), Henry (odd job boy boot factory) and Alice (born 1890) were living at 59, Higham Road, Chesham.
On the 1911 Census Henry was a boot rivetter and living with his parents, Amy and Alice at Wellington Road, Raunds, Northants.
Wartime Service
Henry attested on 15 Jan 1916 as Gunner 102138 in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was posted to 217 Siege Battery and went to France with them on 20 Jan 1917.
217 Siege Battery consisted of four 6 inch (150 mm) Guns in two Batteries. The Battery was allocated to the following Heavy Artillery Groups (HAG) : 33 HAG - 27 Jan 1917, 68 HAG – 7 Jun 1917, 7 HAG -14 Jun 1917, 48 HAG – 6 Jul 1917. It was at this last deployment that Henry was killed in action on 30 Aug 1917. From the Date and place of his burial it is presumed that the 217 Siege Battery were in the Ypres Sector supporting the fighting of Passchendaele (3rd Ypres) and may have a result of counter battery fire by the Germans.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £4 and arrears of £6 4s 2d was paid to his father.
