Pre War

Harry Preston was born in 1897 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son of William Arthur and Annie Preston and baptised on 15 September 1897 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of nine children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 5 Red Lion Yard, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a timber carter. They remained there in 1911 at which time Harry was aged 13. 


His parents later lived at 30 Victoria Road, Berkhamsted and then moving  to 18 Victoria Road. 

Wartime Service

Harry enlisted in Watford and initially served with the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, under reg. no. 6007, and was posted to the 10th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, later transferring to the 1st (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers, London Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 27 April 1917, aged 19. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 18s 10d. 

His mother received a a pension of 4s 6d a week following his father's death.
