Pre War

Frederick Daniel Preston was born in 1896 in Berkhamsted, the son of Thomas and Eliza (Elizabeth) Preston and one of nine children. He was baptised on 20 May 1896 at Great Berkhamsted. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 29 Bridge Street, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a labourer. They remained there in 1911 at which time, 14 year old Frederick was working as an errand boy. 


His parents later lived at 20 Castle Street, Berkhamsted. 

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted in Berkhamsted and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 8th Battalion. 


He was killed in action on 23 March 1917, aged 20 when the Battalion were in trenches near Maroc and is buried in Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 10s and pay owing of £3 7s 2d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
