Pre War
William Fyfe (or Fife) was born on 5 April 1884 in Rattray, Perthshire to Allan Proctor, Flax & Jute spinner, and Margaret (nee Fife).
On the 1901 Census William was listed as a mercantile clerk.
He married Ivy Constance Griffith in Bromley in 1909. They had a son, Allan (born1910), and two daughters Rosalind (born 1911) and Clarice May (born 1912). William and family were living at ‘Drumsheen’, Keary Road, Blairgowrie, Scotland. Ivy lived at 1 Clarence Road, Harpenden in the 1920’s
Wartime Service
William had joined 1/1st Scottish Horse Yeomanry ( he had the rank of Captain which suggests he may have enlisted at some time prior to 1914) which was embarked on SS ’Transylvania’on 17 Aug 1915 at Davenport sailing via Malta for Gallipoli , landing at Suvla Bay on 2 Sept 1915 having been re-equipped as Infantry.
As part of 2nd Mounted Division , which despite their title fought dismounted at Gallipoli, they took part in the fighting at Suvla Bay, Scimitar Hill and W Hills as well as the trench warfare that followed. William was wounded and during his evacuation to Imbros Island abroad Hospital Ship ‘Valdivia’ he died of his wounds on 27 Sep 1915.
Additional Information
Probate of £1043 was granted to his widow Ivy whose address was given as Drumsheen, Keary Road, Blairgowrie, Scotland. Ivy also received his arrears of £137 17s 7d. Younger brother David Paris served with 1 Bn Honourable Artillery Company from Jun 1915 in B.E.F. and was commissioned in 1916 as Lieutenant in Indian Army.
