Pre War
Born in 1878 in Essendon, Herts. Son of Frederick and Elizabeth Pressley. Baptised on the 19th May 1878, in Essendon, Herts.
The 1881 census shows Frederick aged 3 living with his Parents, and 2 Sisters, in Hertford Road, Essendon, Herts. and the 1891 census shows Frederick aged 12 living with his widowed father and 2 brothers in Essendon, Herts. His occupation is given as a General labourer. In 1901 the census shows Frederick aged 23 living as a boarder at 62 High Road, Southgate, Middlesex. His occupation is a Coachman/Groom.
Frederick married Eliza Sarah South, on the 12th December 1903, in Southgate, Middlesex. They had 3 children Ruby, Freda and Frederick. 1911 census shows Frederick aged 33 Married to Eliza and with a 5-year-old daughter Ruby, living at Winchmore Livery Stables, Green Lane, Winchmore Hill. His Occupation is given as a Coachman
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Southgate. He served with the 21st Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, with the service number 87680. He was transferred to the 11th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment, with the service number 20353.
He served with then on the Western Front from 31st October 1917 to 12th November 1917. He then moved with his Battalion to the Italian Front from the 13th November 1917 to the 2nd March 1918. He moved back to the Western Front with his Battalion and served there from 3rd March 1918 to the 29th April 1918. He was transferred to the 7th Battalion, City of London, Royal Fusiliers, with the service number GS/82929, on the 30th April 1918.
He was Killed in Action on the 27th August 1918.
Additional Information
His personal inscription on the headstone reads: “Son of Frederick Pressley: Husband of Eliza. S. Pressley, of “Fernlands” 87, The Grove, Palmers Green, London”.
