Pre War
George Pratt was born on 24 Oct 1899 in Upwell, Norfolk (baptised 19 Nov 1899 at St Peter, Upwell) to Richard Pratt, police officer, and Agnes (nee Smithson).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, John R (born 1877) Henry H (born 1879), Edith (born 1882), Ernest R (born 1886), Louisa (born 1888) and Agnes (born 1891) were living at Hall Moor, Deopham Road, Hingham, Norfolk.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Henry, Anna Maria, Louisa, Agnes, May (born 1893), Sidney James (born 1894), Catherine (born 1898) and George were living at Town Street, Upwell, Norfolk.
George’s father died in 1910.
On the 1911 Census the family of mother (charwoman), Sidney (farm labourer), Catherine and George were living at Town Street, Upwell.
Wartime Service
No Service record was found for George. He volunteered as Private 4041 about Jun/Jul 1915 in the Cambridgeshire Regiment (a Territorial Only Unit) and was posted into 3rd/1st Battalion, this Battalion had been formed in Feb 1915.
The Battalion moved to Windsor, Berks in Aug 1915 and on to Halton Camp in Oct 1915. George took ill while at Halton, he was probably treated at Tring War Hospitals but died from Diptheria on 9 Nov 1915. (he was only 16 years old).
Additional Information
No War gratuity was awarded and arrears of £3 14s 8d was paid to his mother. Brother Sidney James served with Norfolk Regiment as L/Cpl 9004 and was killed in action on 9 Apr 1918.
