Pre War

Walter Bayliss was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1897, the son of Harry and Jane Bayliss and one of ten children. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 21 Highfield Road, Great Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a bricklayer. They remained there in 1911 at which time Walter was working as a messenger. 


His parents later lived at 118, George St., Great Berkhamsted, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


Walter was killed in action on 15 September 1916 during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (Battle of the Somme). He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £2 10s 6d. His mother received a pension of 3s 5d a week.
