John Edward Powley was born on 4 March 1894 in Arlesey, Beds, the son of John Henry and Emily Powley, and baptised at Ickleford on 22 July 1894. He had a younger sister, named Beatrice. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in the Village Street, Ickleford, Herts where his father was working as a Carpenter. They remained there in 1911 Ickleford and 17 year old John was then working as a labourer to a machinist.


His parents later lived at 2 Mill Cottages, Ickleford, Herts.

Wartime Service

John enlisted in Hitchin in September 1914 and initially served with the Bedfordshire Regiment (Reg. No. 14232), later transferring to the Machine Gun Corps. (Infantry) 51st Company.


He was sent to France in February 1916 and was involved in the British Offensive on the Somme. He was killed in action on 4 November 1916, aged 22 and is buried at the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 10s and pay owing of £7 1s 5d. His mother received a pension of five shillings a week.
