Auckland War Memorial Museum: via email, “2nd Lieut Georg Aubyn Powell (25 Reserve Squadron, RFC) (Thetford, Norfolk – 7th Wing, Training Brigade) died as a result of a motor accident. The following quote explains the circumstances. “While walking along the Euston Road at about 17.30 towards Thetford and pushing a cycle, was struck from behind by a following motor cyclist and seriously injured. Died six hours later at Cambridge Eastern General Hospital and is buried at Hatfield” (Reference Errol W. Martyn “For Your Tomorrow” – Volume 1, p41.”

P.1: New Zealand’s Roll of Honour – Powell- On the 7th December, 1916, at Cambridge, England, Second lieutenant George Aubyn Powell, Royal Flying Corps, youngest beloved son of H and G Powell, Byron Street, Napier; aged 27years. Accidently killed while on duty.

Additional Information
George's grave is not a CWGC one, suggesting that perhaps he had family in the area. The headstone bears the inscription:
