Pre War
Herbert Edward was born in 1898 in Potters Bar to Edward Basham, a farm worker, and Kezia (nee Taylor).
On the 1901 Census Herbert was living at Darkes Lodge, Park Lane, South Mimms with his parents and older sister Daisy (born 1895). On the 1911 Census he was at Field Cottage, Rowley Green, Arkley again with his parents (Father was a cowman on farm)
Wartime Service
No Service record was found for Herbert. He enlisted as a Territorial Soldier with Suffolk Regiment as Private in 1/6th (Cyclist) Battalion.
Herbert was renumbered in the Territorial Force in 1917 as 266304. The 1/6th Battalion had been formed at Ipswich in 1914 and did not serve overseas. This would account for the non-award of medals. Herbert at some time was transferred to the 691 Company, Labour Corps as Private 438508. Herbert died of Pneumonia on 30 Oct 1918 at Military Hospital, Bury St Edmunds and was interred at Bells Hill Burial Ground, Barnet, Herts.
