Pre War
Joseph Poulton was born in Tring on 23 Oct 1886 (baptised 17 Dec 1894 in Tring), the son of James Poulton, bricklayer's labourer, and Eliza (nee Grace).
The 1891 census lists him as living with his parents in Brook Street, Tring, a four year old with his two younger brothers, William,(born1888), and John (born 1890).
Joseph’s mother died in 1899.
on the 1901 Census his father was a widower and Joseph (a 15 year old “cow boy farm) was living at 15, Akeman Street, Tring with William, Thomas , Alfred (born 1892) and George (born 1899).
In 1903 Joseph joined the Militia on 17 Apr 1903 as Private 4606 in 4th Battalion the Bedfordshire Regiment, 16th Foot. He transferred to the Regiment proper on 8 Sep 1903.
Joseph he married Alice Rose Final at Berkhamsted, and on 28 Sep 1910 their son Joseph James was born. In the 1911 census Joseph was based at Maida Barracks, Aldershot, and his wife and baby were living at 8 Western Road, Tring, with James and four of his sons.
Wartime Service
As Joseph Poulton was already a trained soldier he may have been called up from Reserve as the Great War began in Aug 1914 and was posted to 1st Battalion as Private 7677, going to France on 16 Aug 1914.
During the Battle of Mons (23-24 Aug 1914) he received a head wound (cloth caps were worn as Steel Helmets not issued until later) and was evacuated to UK. He was treated at 4 General Hospital, Glasgow where he died of his wounds on 31 Oct 1914.

War Gratuity of £5 and arrears of £2 15s 5d was paid to his widow.
