Pre War

Eli Samuel Potter was born in Richmond, Surrey on 4 Jan 1898 (baptised 10 Jul 1898, Holy Trinity, Richmond) to Davis Jones Potter, gardener, and May Marie (nee Winslet). They were living at 34, Castle Gate, Richmond.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Angeline (born 1894), David (born 1895), Samuel, and May (born 1899) were living at Chapel Cottages, Park Street, Richmond.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Samuel and May were living at St George’s Road, Richmond.

Wartime Service

Samuel enlisted, giving his date of birth as 17 Sep 1897 (but was marked as underage on his record) in London for the Royal Marines Light Infantry on 5 Oct 1914 as Private CH/19232 (CH for Chatham) and was posted RM Depot, Deal, Kent. 


He died from disease on 2 Mar 1915 and is buried in Deal, Kent.
