Walter Joseph Barnden was born in 1880, in Snodland, Kent, son of Walter Henry Barnden and Eliza Ann (nee Hoadley) Bernden.
He was Baptised on 17, August 1881, at All Saints Church, Snodland, Kent.
1881 Census records Walter aged 11 Months, living with his parents, sisters Lucy (5) and Amelia (3), at, 1 Moles Cottages, Snodland, Kent. His mother Eliza died in 1883, aged 29.
1891 Census records Walter aged 11, at school, living with his widower father, and sister Amelia (13) at, 14 Victoria Street, Eccles, Kent. The family had a live-in Housekeeper.
1901 Census has Walter living at 17, Victoria Street, Eccles, Kent, with his widower father, he was single and working as a Clay Labourer. The family had a live-in Housekeeper.
1911 Census records Walter aged 28, single, working as a Builders Labourer in Wales. He was boarding with Mr & Mrs W. Lewis at, 31 Newbridge Road, Pontllanfraith, Monmouthshire.
Walter married Annie Elizabeth Howard in 1916, in Barnet. They went on to have one son Walter George David Barnden born in the later part of 1918. The family Lived at 2 Essex Road, Borehamwood, Herts.
Wartime Service
Walter Initially attested into the Bedfordshire Regiment, as Private 27978, later transferred to The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment with the service number 34874.
He was Killed in Action on 1 October 1918.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs. A. E. Barnden, 2, Essex Road, Boreham Wood, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "BLESSED ARE THEY THAT REST IN THE LORD", His effects of £13-8s-11d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £11-10s-00d, went to his widow Annie Elizabeth Barnden. Their son Walter George David Barnden was killed during the Second World War, at Arnhem (Operation Market Garden) (17 to 25 September 1944), He was 937475 Gunner Walter G. D. Barnden of the 6th Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment, (Anti-Tank Regiment). He was Killed in Action on 24th September 1944. He is buried in the CWGC Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery, Netherlands.
