Charles was the second son of William and Caroline R. Barnard, of 2, The Fleet, Royston.

Wartime Service

After enlisting in the Hertfordshire Regiment in December 1914 he went to France in 1916, where he transferred to the West Riding Regiment. His Battalion were part of the 147th Brigade in the 49th (West Riding) Division and it was whilst they were located in the area around Broodseinde Ridge, that Charles was struck by shell fragments and killed.
