Son of Alfred William and the late Ellen (nee CROSS) BARKER; husband of Annie Louisa (nee DOWSETT) BARKER.

His parents married 9 February 1880 at Christ Church, Great Warley, Essex.  Ellen died 1909 in the Romford district aged 51, and was buried 14 December at St Mary’s, Great Ilford; Alfred died 1918 in the Romford district aged 64, and was buried 2 April, also at St Mary’s, Great Ilford.

Arthur was born 1892 in Ilford, and married 1913 at St Chad’s, Chadwell Heath, Essex; they had two children.  Annie never remarried, and died 1968 in the Brentwood, Essex, district aged 77.

On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Ilford, with his parents and eight siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a grocer’s assistant aged 18, he still lived in Ilford, with his widowed father and six siblings.

Wartime Service

He attested 11 December 1915 for Short Service (Duration of the War) at the Town Hall, Ilford, Essex: a milk carrier aged 23, 5’7½” tall, of Ilford.  He was mobilised 7 April 1916 and went to France 6 September 1916.  He suffered a gun shot wound to the chest 17 November 1916, and died at 34 Casualty Clearing Station; his widow was notified 23 November 1916.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals.

Arthur is possibly the A BARKER commemorated in the Borough Roll of Honour.
