George Edward Pomfret/Pomfrett was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in 1881, son of Henry Pomfret/Pomfrett a Publican and Eliza Pomfret/Pomfrett (nee Merry). The eldest of nine children.
He was Baptised in Waltham Cross, Herts, on 23rd January 1881.
1881 Census records George aged 4 months living with his widowed grandmother Emma Pomfret and her three children in Waltham Cross, Herts. His parents Henry and Eliza are recorded as running the Prince of Wales PH, in Denmark Street, Camberwell, Surrey.
1891 Census George (11) is living with his Uncle’s George (32) & Albert (23), and his aunt Ellen (22) Pomfret/Pomfrett, in High Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His parents are recorded as running the Prince of Wales PH, 73 Tanners Hill, St Paul, Deptford, Kent, his four siblings Henry (9), Florence (6), Arthur (4) and Nellie (1), are living with their parents.
His father Henry died in 1900 aged 42, the death was Registered in Edmonton, Middx.
1901 Census, George (20) is living with his aunt Ellen, now married to Charles Aldridge and their two children Ellen (9) and Mable (3) at, 51 Eleanor Road, Cheshunt, Herts. His occupation is recorded as a Machinist in the Gun trade. His widowed mother is living at 16 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, Essex, with his five sisters.
1911 Census, George is still living with his aunt Ellen and her family, still at 51 Eleanor Road. His widowed mother, brother Arthur, sister Ethel and twin sisters Alice & Dorothy are living at, 26 Chingford Road, Walthamstow, Essex.
Wartime Service
George enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the Royal Sussex Regiment with the Service number G/21559. On completion of his training, he saw action on the Western Front.
George was wounded in action and evacuated back to England for treatment, he died on 8th October 1918, at the 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, Surrey, of his wounds.
He was buried on 14th October 1918, in the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts, aged 36.
Additional Information
His aunt Ellen Aldridge received a Dependents Pension of 10/- a week and his effects of £40-06-03.
