Pre War

John Pledger was born on 7 November 1891 in Littlebury Green, Essex, the son of Henry and Mary (May) Pledger (nee Reed) and one of eleven children. The family had moved to Wyddial, nr Buntingford, Hertfordshire by 1901, at which time his father was working as a stockman on a farm. They remained in Wyddial in 1911 and John was then working as a cowman on a farm. At the time of John's death, his parents were said to be living at Moles Farm, Wyddial.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London and joined the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner, serving with 81st/82nd company.


He died of appendicitis at Ferozepore, in India on 14 March 1916, aged 24, and was buried in Ferozepore Military Cemetery, India the following day. He is also named on the Kirkee 19145-1918 Memorial, India.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £12 5s 11d. No pension records have been found.


Brother-in-law of Kenneth Martin also commemorated on the Wyddial memorial.
