Pre War
Arthur William Player was born in 1885 in Bishop's Stortford. On the 1891 Census he is listed as a visitor at the home of George and Mary Paulett in Histon, Cambs. He remained living with them on 1901 Census, but was said to be a stepson of George Paulett. On the 1911 Census they were living at 8 St John’s Road, Cambridge, and he was said to be their nephew and was working as a Tailor, the same occupation as George Paulett. It is likely he was the illegitimate son of Mary Ann Paulett (nee Player).
Wartime Service
He initially enlisted into the Cambridgeshire Regiment under Reg. No. 4583 on 29 December 1915. He was posted to France on 15 September 1916 and transferred into the Norfolk Regiment on 24 September 1916. He suffered from shell shock on 18 October 1916 and returned to duty on 27 October. He had two incidences of impetigo. He died from a gunshot wound.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £7 10s and pay owing of £5 16s 9d.
