Pre War

Albert Edward was born 1896 on 24 Apr 19896 in Harpenden to Albert Edward, a builders labourer and Lizzie Maria (nee Atwood).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Breadcroft, Harpenden. By 1911 the family were living at Cold Harbour, Harpenden. Albert Jr. was employed as an errand boy at a nursery.


Albert enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment 4th Battlion (Herts) probably as a Territorial as Private 4/6862 (4 for Battalion and 6862 serial issued between Aug 1911 and Jan 1912.

Wartime Service

Soon after the outbreak of war he probably volunteered to serve overseas and having transferred to 2nd Batt Beds went to France on 11 Nov 1914.


The Bedfordshires were in reserve at the opening day of the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, but were still subject to harassing rifle and shellfire and suffered 7 killed (including Albert) and 41 wounded. His remains were not recovered and is remembered at Le Touret Missing Memorial.
