Alexander Bamford was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 19 October 1891, son of William Anthony Bamford a, Stone Mason and Mary Bamford (nee Milroy). One of nine children, four brothers and four sisters.
Alexander started school at St Mary’s Infants school, Cheshunt on 22 June 1896, aged 5, his date of birth is recorded as 19 October 1891. He left St Mary’s in June 1899, to go to Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt, leaving in November 1906, to start work.
1901 Census records Alexander aged 8, living with his parents and six siblings at, 59 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census records Alexander aged 18, working as a Gardener at the local Nursery, living at home with his parents, brothers Harry (29) and John (24), still at, 59 Albury Grove Road, Cheshunt.
His father William Bamford died in April 1917, aged 64.
Wartime Service
Alexander enlisted at Bedford, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 27508. Seeing action on the Western Front.
Alexander was Killed in Action on 25 September 1916, during the Battle of Morval (25 to 28 September 1916) which was part of the Battle of the Somme (1 July to 18 November 1916). Alexander has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing.

Additional Information
His mother Mary Bamford received a dependent pension of 7/6 a week from 26th June 1917, and his effects of £2-6s-3d, Pay Owing and a War Gratuity of £3.
