Pre War

William was born in 1900 in Little London, Andover, Hants and christened on 16 August 1900 in Christ Church Smannell, Hants. His parents were Charles and Mary Annie Ballard (née Weston). They married on 28 May1898 in Christ Church Smannell, Hants.

In 1901 the family were living at Littloe London, Andover, Hants. Present were both parents: Charles (25) and Mary (24), with Charles and working as a plate layer. Their only child was William Charles at just 8 months.

By 1911 William was 10 and living with his grandparents Charles (61) and Jane Ballard (59) at Church St, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Andover, Hants. His parents were living at Arch Cottages, Knights Enham, Nr Andover. His father was still working as a plate layer and William was their only child. 

Officially he was recorded as born in Little London, Hants and enlisted in Andover.

Wartime Service

He was in the 51st Battalion and had been given the Regimental Number 27575. Died in the Military Hospital in Ipswich, possibly of influenza epidemic (Spanish Flu).

He is buried in Andover Cemetery Row G, Grave 654. 

The headstone is in the form of a stone cross on three stone plinths. The bottom plinth states his age and the words "Abide with me". The former footstone with his initials and "1918" has been placed against the stone cross.

Additional Information

After his death £5 9s 7d pay owing was authorised to go to his mother, Mary, on 29 January 1919. There was no war gratuity paid,


His pension cards record Mrs Mary Ann Ballard as his mother and as his dependant, living at 2 Railway Cottage, Walworth, Andover. She was awarded a pension of 5s a week from 29 April 1919.
