Pre War

Arthur Ernest Pinnock was born in Hackney, Middlesex, on 29th August 1881, son of Arthur Pinnock a, Hackney Carriage Driver and Catherine (Kate) Elizabeth Pinnock (nee Winter). Arther’s second wife they  had four son’s William, Herbert, Josiah and Arthur.


His father Arthur died in July 1887, in Islington, Middx, aged 56.


1891 Census records Arthur aged 9, a scholar at the Orphan Working School, Maitland Park, Haverstock Hill, London, with his brothers, William Henry (12), Herbert Edward (11), and Josiah Daniel (10).


On 29th May 1896, he was Baptised with his brother Herbert at, St. James Church, Enfield Highway, Middx, their address was given as 6 Roebuck Terrace, Enfield Highway, Middx, and their parents deceased.


1901 Census, Arthur (20) is recorded as boarding with his half-sister Marian and her husband Hans Lofus Mortensen at 4 Carterhatch Road, Enfield, Middx. His occupation is a Nursery Engine Driver.


Arthur Jr. married Elizabeth Maskell the daughter of James William and Mary Ann Maskell in the early part of 1908. They went on to have two sons Eric Arthur born in September 1909, and Albert Edmund born in April 1913.


1911 Census records Arthur as married to Elizabeth they have one son Eric Arthur 18 months, they are living at 6 Melbourne Road, Waltham Cross, Herts, Arthur is employed as a House Painter. They have A boarder Robert Candler, a Black Smith. 

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted at Edmonton, Middx, posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and issued with the service number 46748.


On completion of his training, he saw action on the Western Front. Arthur Jr. died on 12th September 1918, at No. 38 Casualty Clearing Station, of Gun Shot Wounds, aged 37. He is buried at the CWGC Sunken Road Cemetery, Boisleux St. Marc, France. 

Additional Information

Elizabeth received a widow’s pension of £1-5-5, a week from 24th March 1919, and his effects of £1-17-10, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3-2-2.

Elizabeth remarried in July 1919, to Albert W. Stocker, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx.
