Percy Edward Pine was born in Chelsea on 26 Oct 1897 (baptised 7 May 1899, St Johns, Chelsea) to William P Pine, and Naomi (nee Barnes). They were living at 38, Edith Grove, Chelsea.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Percy, Charles (born 1899), together with Ann Barnes (born 1885, sister of Naomi) were living at Burnaby Street, Chelsea, London.
On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Percy, Charles, Nellie (born 1903), Bessie (born 1905), William (born 1907) and Walter (born 1910) were living at 26, Redfield Lane, Earls Court, London.




Wartime Service

Percy enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery as Private 102753.Following training became Gunner and was posted to CX (110) Brigade R F A as a member of B Battery, the Brigade had four Batteries – A , B, C and D each of 4-18 pounder field guns. Percy went to France with them joining the 25th Division on 27 Sep 1915.

In 1916 they took part in the Battles of the Somme at Albert (1-13 Jul), Bazentin (14-18 Jul), Pozieres (23 Jul -10 Aug), Ancre Heights (1 Oct-11Nov). On 31 October the Division moved to the Ploegstreet area taking part in the Battles of Messines (7-14 Jun 1917) and on 31 Jul 1917 the opening of the 3rd Battle of 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) at Pilkem Ridge. Percy was a casualty dying on 4 Aug 1917 from the effects of Gas. (an artillery tactic was to fire gas shells in counter battery fire forcing the gun teams to wear gas respirators, restricting vision and fighting efficiency.)

War Gratuity of £9 10s and arrears of £16 19s 11d was paid to his father.
