Pre War

Will Baker was born on 14 Jul 1895 (baptised  23 Aug 1907 in Tring to Herbert Harry Baker, a house painter and Jane  (nee  Chandler).


On the 1901 Census  the family of parents, May (gas mantle maker, born 1887), Gladstone E (born 1891), Lily (born 1893), Will and Clara (born 1899) were living at 46, Wingrave Road, New Mill. Tring.


On the 1911 Census the family were still living at  46, Wingrave Road, Tring and consisted of  parents, Will (telegraph message boy, Clara, Stanley (born 1902) and granddaughter Gertrude Beatrice (born 1908).

Wartime Service

Will enlisted on 10 Aug 1914 in London as Private 17360 in the Royal Marines Light Infantry.. The Royal Marines were organised into two branches at that time - Light Infantry (soldiers) and Artillery (usually ship borne).  He was posted to HQ Portsmouth and acquired the Prefix PO to his service number.  Will went to Belgium with the Royal Marine Brigade (Based at Dunkirk) on 19 Sep 1914 to assist in the Defence of  Antwerp returning to 4 on 12 Nov 1914. In 1915.


Will was posted to 2nd  Battalion RMLI in the Middle East Expeditionary Force and landed on Gallipoli on 28 Apr 1915 at Cape Helles. He was evacuated on 2 Oct 1915 and died while on leave on 21 Oct 1915 at home in Tring.
