Pre War
Nelson Tom was born on 27 Jun 1888 in Hilperton, near Trowbridge, Wilts to Joseph Pepler Pike, a farmer, and Agnes Fanny (nee Woods).
On the 1891 Nelson was living with his Grandfather George H. Woods at the Parsonage, North Bradley, Wilts. while his father and family were living at Sound Farm, Hilperton. On the 1901 Census Nelson was with the rest of the family at West Ashton Farm, West Ashton, Wilts. By the 1911 Census, Nelson was employed as a chauffeur by Edward Welton, a stockbroker, at Longfield, Hatfield Road, St Albans Nelson’s mother and Father were living at Shafford Farm, St Albans. Nelson had 5 Brothers and 2 sisters. His mother at one time was living at ‘Devon’, Ox Lane, Harpenden.
Wartime Service
Nelson enlisted in the Army Service Corps as Private M1/7617. The prefix to his serial shows him to be a qualified driver Motor Transport.
He went to France on 15 Jan 1915 with 68 Company Motor Transport. Which was associated with No 1 GHQ Ammunition Park. During his service he was promoted to Serjeant. Nelson died in 41st Stationary Hospital, situated at Gailly nr. Amiens on 20 Jul 1917.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £16 and arrears of £45 12s 2d were paid to his father. Probate of £479 14s 2d was granted to his mother. Nelson’s address for probate given as Someries Farm, Luton.
