Pre War

Bernard Eton Bailey was born in Bishop's Stortford in 1889 to William and Sarah Bailey. His father died in 1906.


On the 1911 Census he was living at 63 Hadham Road, Bishop's Stortford with his widowed mother and working as an Insurance Broker's Clerk at Messrs. Sedgewick, Collins and Co in London.


He enlisted in March 1916.

Wartime Service

It was reported that he went to France in June 1916 and around November was severely wounded in the leg and was in hospital for about year, returning to France in June 1917


He was killed during the Battle of Cambrai. On 30 November at 7.45 am the Germans made a strong attack and pierced the line, breaking through Lateau Wood in great numbers.  There was fierce fighting and heavy casualties on both sides.


He was first reported missing, but was later presumed killed on or about the 30th November 1917.


He also served under service no. 4218 London Regiment.

Additional Information

His mother Sarah received a war gratuity of £7 10s. His pay owing was divided equally between his mother and brothers James and William. Both brothers served; James in the London Regiment and William in the Berkshire Regiment and in 1918 both were in England having ben gassed in France.
