Bertram Arthur Bagnall was born on 24 May 1887 in Hackney to Frederick Bagnall, company clerk, and Maria Jane (nee Phillips).
On the 1891 Census Bertram was living with his grandparents Henry and Elizabeth Phillips at 91, St Thomas Road, Hackney, Middx.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Bertram, Elsie (born 1889), Alan Eustace (born 1891), Reginald Ernest (born 1893) and Beatrice Olive (born 1899) were living at 2 Springfield Road, Tottenham, Edmonton, Middlesex.
On the 1911 Census Bertram was working as a fitter and living at 63, Falmer Road, Walthamstow, Essex.
Bertram married Eva Mynott in Spring 1912. There would be two children – Nora Olive (born 26 Aug 1913) and Bertram Ivor (born 29 Feb 1916).
Wartime Service
Bertram enlisted in the Royal Navy on and a few days later on 13 Sep increased his engagement to 8 years. He served mainly at shore establishments as an Airmech 345 in the Royal Naval Air Service (trade – Electrical Instrument Fitter), and by 15 Dec 1916 had been promoted to Chief Petty Officer. On 1 Jul 1917 he transferred to HMS Daedalus (Lee-on Solent) and on 1 Apr 1918 was transferred to the Royal Air Force as Chief Mechanic 200345 serving at No 9 Aircraft Repair Depot at Edmonton in North London.
He took ill and died on 2 Nov 1918 at Cambridge Military Hospital.

Additional Information
War Gratuity of £29 and arrears of £10 12s 4d was paid to his widow, she also received a pension of 29s 4d weekly. Brother Allan Eustace served with Royal Engineers (Inland Water Transport) as Sergeant from 1917-1919. Brother Reginald Ernest served with 3rd County of London Yeomanry (1329) and Machine Gun Corps (150539). Both survived.
Bertie is buried in a non-CWGC grave.
