Pre War

Alfred Bagnall was born on 17 June 1889, the son of William and Lucy Bagnall of Great Haywood, Staffordshire. He was baptised on 28 July 1889 at St Stephen's, Great Haywood, Staffs. He was one of three children with older sister Nellie and older brother Charles.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Great Haywood, Staffordshire and remained there in 1901 when his father was working as a Platelayer on the Railway.

His parents were living at Trent Lane, Great Haywood, Staffs on the 1911 Census and by then Alfred had left the family home but gave that as his home address on enlistment. He also gave his occupation as gardener.

(It is believed that Alfred was working as a gardener for the Tewin Water estate in Hertfordshire prior to enlistment)

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted at Rugeley, Staffordshire on 27 October 1915 and initially joined the RAMC (Reg. No. 76409), and embarked from Southampton to Salonica in August 1916.

He was compulsorily transferred into the 11th Battalion, Welsh Regiment in March 1918 and declared missing on 18 September 1918. He is believed to be buried in the Doiran Military Cemetery, Greece.

Additional Information

The Tewin village war memorial and muster roll at St Peters Church, Tewin list an Arthur Bagnall, however, an Alfred Bagnall is shown on the Absent Voters' List for Tewin in Autumn 1918 living at Tewin Water, probably a servant working at Tewin Water House. CWGC documents give his name as Alfred.

His mother received a war gratuity of £6 10s and pay owing of  £21 6s 8d. Pension records exist but give no indication of any amount paid.
